Background: The study aims in investigating the phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activity of isolated anthraquinones from different parts of Cassia nodosa against various bacterial and fungal strains to confirm their effective use in different traditional medicines against these pathogenic strains.\nMethodology: Fresh plant parts of C.nodosa were collected, dried at room temperature, powdered and extraction of anthraquinones were done using standard protocol. Extracted compounds were screened by UV, IR, 1HNMR, 13CNMR techniques. Agar well diffusion method was used to test the antimicrobial activity of isolated anthraquinones against pathogenic microbial strains.\nPrinciple Findings: The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of Emodin and Rhein in the plant. Maximum level of Emodin(0.66mg/gdw) and Rhein(0.30 mg/gdw) was observed in leaves. The crude compounds exhibited a significant antimicrobial activity. The emodin demonstrated maximum activity against F.moniliforme(IZ=26.00mm) while rhein was more active against A.flavus(IZ=21.00mm).\nConclusion: The inhibitory effects of Emodin and Rhein extracted from various parts of C.nodosa against various pathogenic micro-organisms had clearly demonstrated the usefulness of C.nodosa in the treatment of various diseases caused by these pathogenic strains.
A taxonomic survey was embarked upon to document medicinal plant species at the permanent site of Southwestern University Nigeria, Okun-Owa, Ogun state. The study revealed 90 species in 48 angiosperm families and 85 genera. Euphorbiaceae, Asteraceae and Papilionaceae were the dominant families. Medicinal uses of the plants were collected from herbalists and traditional healers in communities around the University. The trees and herbs also had more species represented while the creepers and liane only had a few. Results obtained from the current study also points out the importance of these flora species in traditional medicine of the surrounding communities and suggest that their conservation and sustainable use be encouraged as a way of ensuring their availability within and outside the study area.
This study’s main purpose is to explore the learners’ attitude towards education in general, and learning English in particular. It aims to elicit an implicit connection between the learners’ and teachers’ attitude and the achievement in English. The research is based on the personal experience of the researcher at JCC, however the case doesn’t much differ from most of the community college in Saudi, and other such vocational institutions. Thus, the findings are likely to be implemented in all those similar institutions that technically as well as academically resemble the sample college. The researcher used the focus group and questionnaires as techniques of data collection, however, personal experience and observation play a major role in the process of interpretation, conclusion and recommendations. The findings show that the positive attitude towards learning/teaching English plays an important role in the overall achievement in the target language. It is found that there is a positive correlation between attitude towards learning/teaching English and their proficiency in it. It has also been found that in spite of the fact all the necessary equipment and resources are in practice, the achievement is not up to the mark. Thus, teachers’ role is quite crucial in this connection. Many other studies can be undertaken to prove the positive effect of the attitude of the teachers/learners towards education, learning and English language.
